On November 3, the College of Health and Human Services will host the 2017 Health and Human Services Hero Awards to recognize the unsung heroes in our community whose actions, thoughts and words have had a transformative impact in our region. For the rest of the month, we will be highlighting our ten honorees in our Community Heroes Series.
Name: Nancy Hoff
Occupation: Nursing Education Program Consultant and Secretary, Health Education Alliance
Nominated by: School of Nursing and the Central California Center for Excellence in Nursing
For many in the local nursing community, Nancy Hoff is an uplifting role model. Her nursing career spans five decade and counting – many of those years spent in the field of education.
After receiving her bachelor’s degree in Nursing from the University of Santo Tomas in the Philippines, and working as a staff nurse there, Hoff was recruited to Fresno to fulfill a nursing shortage in the Central Valley.
The Valley would become her new home and the region where she would make a lasting impact on the healthcare field. Recognizing the need for higher education in her role, she returned to college at Fresno State, receiving her master’s degree in Nursing in 1978.
Hoff later worked under the Extended Education Program at the University, where she co-developed and taught a 40-hour continuing education course for certification of residential facilities for elderly and assisted living administrators – which was the first of its kind. During this time, she owned and operated three residential care facilities for the elderly.
Hoff later joined the nursing faculty of Fresno City College, where she coordinated the Paradigm Nursing Program, a partnership between Fresno City College and five local hospitals, whose purpose was to increase the number of registered nurses. The Paradigm Program produced over 700 additional registered nurses helping to decrease the severe shortage in the Valley.
Hoff’s desire to ensure excellence in the profession and passion for educating the next nursing leaders is what drives her work, which continues to this day through her work with Health Education Alliance and as a nursing program consultant throughout the state.
The 2017 Health and Human Services Hero Awards, which celebrates heroes from each of the seven departments, as well as centers and institutes within our college, will be held on November 3, 2017 at Fresno State.
